The Power of Fogponics: The Ideal Root Environment for Accelerated Growth

Fogponics is an advanced form of aeroponics, a method of growing plants without soil. Using precision nozzles from IKEUCHI Co., Ltd., we deliver a nutrient-rich, ultra-fine mist (a “semi-dry fog”) directly onto the plant’s root system (the rhizosphere).
This method offers several powerful advantages not found in conventional soil or hydroponic cultivation.

Accelerated Growth:

Because the roots are exposed to the air, oxygen supply increases dramatically. This activates the plant’s metabolism, enabling it to grow at approximately twice the speed of traditional field cultivation.

Maximum Resource Efficiency:

By atomizing water and fertilizer and spraying them directly onto the roots, there is almost no waste. It is an extremely sustainable method that can reduce water usage by up to 90% compared to field cultivation.

Reduced Risk of Disease:

By eliminating soil entirely, we fundamentally remove the risk of soil-borne diseases and pests. This allows us to achieve clean cultivation without the use of any pesticides.

The NBI Advantage: Recreating a Mountain Stream with a Chiller System

Wasabi is a plant that naturally grows in cool, pristine mountain streams, and its greatest weakness is heat. When the water temperature exceeds 18°C, its growth slows significantly, and the risk of disease increases. This has always been the single biggest barrier to stable, year-round wasabi production.
To overcome this challenge, we have integrated a custom chiller (cooling unit) system into our Fogponics setup.

Maintaining Optimal Water Temperature:

This system allows us to consistently keep the temperature of the nutrient solution sprayed on the roots between 13°C and 15°C—the optimal range for wasabi growth—regardless of the season.

Enabling Stable Summer Production:

Even on a mid-summer day when the outside air temperature exceeds 35°C, the wasabi’s root zone is kept as cool as a mountain stream. This makes high-quality, stable production during the summer—previously considered impossible—a reality.

Skilled wasabi farmers intuitively understand the health and growth stage of a wasabi plant by observing subtle changes in leaf size, color, and shape. Our AI model aims to replicate this “master craftsmanship” through data and further evolve it.

By integrating fixed-point cameras with AI, we continuously record and analyze the condition of wasabi leaves 24/7, non-invasively. This allows us to accumulate cultivation know-how—which previously relied on individual experience—as objective data, paving the way for a future where anyone can grow premium wasabi.
